3 steps to starting your own marketing business

Starting your own business can be a huge job in itself, and that’s all before you have to start generating business to make it a success. There are often aspects of starting a business which people overlook, and it’s only once they’re going through the experience do they realise that there’s more to it than they’d initially realised.

To help you through the process we’ve highlighted 3 steps you’ll need in order to stand a chance of successfully starting a business.

Knowledge and experience

First and foremost, it’s crucial to have the necessary knowledge and experience when you opt to start your own business. So if you’re planning on offering marketing support then you need to ensure you have the expertise to deliver on what you promise.

Remember your clients are paying you for what you know and the results you can offer, therefore your knowledge should be at a level where it’s sufficient enough to gain them a return on their investment. This is an area where your ego can’t cloud your judgement, be honest with yourself and if you believe you have the know-how to go ahead then consider yourself ready for the next step, however if you don’t then you should ideally look at another option.

Finances

When we refer to finances we talking about having your finances in order on 2 levels. The first is having the finances to cover the costs of setting up. This is one you’ll have considered and even if you feel like you can comfortably cover the cost of setting up your business always look to avoid unnecessary expenditure early on. For example, if you’re able to work from home then don’t splash money out on renting an office straight away, instead wait till your business starts generating a level of cash flow which then enables you to do this in the comfort of knowing it can be sustained.

The second part of your finances is ensuring you have enough to cover your living expenses during the early stages of your business. There’s no guarantee you’re going to be flooded with customers right away, especially if you don’t have a huge network or a long list of contacts. Therefore it’s vital that you know you can comfortably make it through these periods without the extra burden of worrying about drying out your savings.

Network

As with any business you need to start developing contacts and clients. Some people may leave an industry with a few contacts who can help them along during the early stages however others are often having to start from scratch. Either way, to really get up and running you’ll be required to start networking which can prove a daunting task for some but one which is certainly necessary.

If you’re a little wary of networking then be sure to read our blog on how to improve your networking skills and in turn help your business generate more leads.

There’s plenty of work to do in between everything mentioned above but they’re some of the key stages of consideration that should be thought about before and during the initial stages of setting up your business.
